Discussions about freedom and equality, moral dilemmas related to artificial intelligence or intellectual property, the fundamentals of democracy and the moral principles of intergenerational relationsand attitude towards the environment are part of our, society’s, political and social life.

Ethics and political philosophy are fields that explore the relationship between morality and law. Lively discussion of these issues has the potential to significantly improve the quality of public debate about them and, ultimately, make relevant political decisions more consistent and well-founded. The interest of future generations of Georgian philosophers in this topic is important to fill the existing deficit.

The Second International Seasonal Doctoral School in Ethics and Political Philosophy, organized on September 3-8, 2024 with the support of the Civil Society Foundation, served to forge intellectual community with relevant competence and encourage ongoing global discussions at the local level. The school, held at the scientific residence of the Institute of Alpine Ecology of Ilia State University in Stepantsminda, brought together 25 participants.

Along with students from Ilia State University, the school was attended by internationally renowned experts, doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and young researchers from universities in England, Ireland, Sweden, Poland and the Czech Republic. Participants gained knowledge and discussed such issues as experimental political philosophy, environmental and animal ethics, the theory of democracy, the meaning of the concept of harm and limitations in ethics and political philosophy.

Led by leading experts in the field, the school’s activities will allow participants to expand their academic interests and develop research work on issues that are at the intersection of contemporary political philosophy, ethics and political science. The project will contribute to the evolvement of debates about current and pressing socio-political issues in scientific and civic circles of Georgia.
