Telavi State University Discusses Higher Education Reform

At 2 pm, April 2, 2014, a discussion on higher education reform was held at Iakob Gogebashvili State University in Telavi. Representatives of the Open Society – Georgia Foundation and the higher education reform platform, as well as faculty members and students, participated in this event.

At the meeting, the results of a research carried out within the framework of the project were presented, followed by discussions.

The objective of this discussion in the region was to ensure the active engagement of academic circles, students, representatives of governmental institutions, and civil society in the process of higher education reform.

In 2013, the International Institute for Education Policy, Planning and Management implemented Strategic Development of Higher Education and Research in Georgia – Reform Supporting Platform Creation, a project financed by the Open Society – Georgia Foundation.

The partners of this project included the National TEMPUS Office, the Center for Social Sciences, the Center for International Education, and the Academic Fellowship Program of the Open Society Foundations.

Based on the analysis of the higher education policy, draft documents in the following direction were developed:

  • Autonomy and academic freedom of universities
  • Financing and financial management of higher education and research
  • Integration of teaching and research
  • Higher education and employment
  • Quality assurance

The project served the goal of identifying strategic directions in the development of the country’s higher education and science and developing a strategic plan for the transformation of this sector.
