On 25 June, the Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel hosted discussions about international legislation on freedom of information and possible reforms in Georgia. The meeting brought together representatives of the Ministry of Justice, Parliament, the Open Society Georgia Foundation (OSGF) and other governmental agencies and NGOs.
Since January 2014, the OSGF along with the Ministry of Justice has been working on freedom of information reforms, in particular on preparing a new freedom of information bill and setting up a body that will supervise freedom of information issues.
As a result of 6-month efforts, laws of different countries, local and international court rulings, legal acts of the European Union and a number of scientific works and essays on the topic of freedom of information have been analyzed in detail.
In the course of the development of a new concept for the freedom of information law, the working group held several meetings with different stakeholders, including international organizations, NGOs, judges and academic staff.
The working group hosted Kevin Dunion, the first Scottish Information Commissioner and the Executive Director of the Centre for Freedom of Information. He will prepare a package of recommendations on a new freedom of information law and introduce them at a meeting in Tbilisi.
