Dealing with persisting problem of fake news has become the most challenging to democratic world. Very often, even literate consumers fail to distinguish between accurate news and false information. On the other hand, strict regulations may curb freedom of expression.
On July 31, local civil society organizations and journalists had an opportunity to talk with David McCraw, the New York Times deputy general counsel and the author of the book “The Truth is our Times: Inside the Fight for Press Freedom in the Age of Alternative Facts”. The meeting was hosted by the Open Society Georgia Foundation. The conversation mainly focused on current challenges posing free and professional media, society and legislators to fight fake news, defamation vs freedom of expression and media regulations.
David’s visit to Georgia became possible with the support of the Open Society Georgia Foundation and other international donors in the framework of Ilia State University Law Summer School Program.
