On Sunday, November 14, at the Center of Contemporary Art in Tbilisi, the Open Society Foundation will present a collection of oral histories entitled “Status: Homeless”. Artist Mariam Natroshvili worked on collecting, processing, and publishing the book. Homelessness is one of the most neglected problems in Georgia.
From the 1990s onwards, the change of state formation, the transition to a market economy, and in the early 2000s, the abolition of the state’s social function and the reliance on the free market, led to severe economic hardship and despair. The mass-scale sale, mortgaging, and other forms of alienation of the real estate that had been retained from the Soviet period seemed to be the only solution to deal with health problems, unemployment, and hunger. As a result, lots of people were left on the street, homeless.
The stories told in this little book present the voices of people living in municipal services. This book is another attempt by us and the author to bring these voices to the general public, to government agencies, to counter a policy of neglect, to instigate positive change.
