Meeting Between Civil Society and Newly Elected Parliament

On December 12, 2016, a meeting was held between representatives of the civil society and the newly elected parliament.  During the meeting, the representatives of non-governmental organizations emphasized the need to accelerate the country’s democratic development, including: electoral system, regional development, judicial reform, law enforcement system (prosecution, State Security Service and Interior Ministry reforms), establishment of an independent investigative body, mechanism for the oversight of law enforcement bodies, rights of minorities, implementation of the EU Association Agreement, the right to privacy, social sector reforms, addressing the problem of homelessness, the legal status of disabled people, foreign policy, and freedom of the media (issue of Public Broadcasting, Rustavi 2).

The final part of the presentation was a ‘Question & Answer’ session.

The Chairman of Parliament, Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze, said that members of parliament and parliamentary committees are ready to consider the NGOs’ recommendations and to cooperate with them on all the issues raised.
