The “Firefly World” for Children with Incurable Diseases

21.01.2025

Every day at the “Firefly World” is dedicated to children with chronic and incurable diseases and their parents. Here, they are helped to relieve physical, psychological and emotional pain, and to ease the burden of everyday life. The first children’s hospice in Georgia, where all services are free, was opened in 2017 on the initiative of the Civil Society Foundation’s team.

Palliative care is needed when we are dealing with diseases that are not amenable to treatment. In children, such diseases include the last stage of cancer, various neurological diseases, severe forms of cerebral palsy, and others.

Children with health issues of this kind visit the “Firefly World” every day. If necessary, they stay in the inpatient unit, or a mobile team visits them at home. The hospice nurses take care of the children’s health and help parents with caring for them. At this time, proper physical and mental support is vital for them, as it significantly alleviates the condition of the patient and his/her family members.

The primary prerequisite of the “Firefly World” is to offer a family-like ambiance. Therefore, the hospice was established employing international experience and fully complies with standards in regard to the qualifications of the service personnel, architectural planning, medical approach, interior, and number of beds.

Over the years, hundreds of donors, among them ordinary citizens and private companies, have been supporting the hospice, established on the initiative of the Civil Society Foundation. The children’s hospice project is a sound example of cooperation between citizens, business and non-governmental sectors.

You also have the opportunity to become a part of the first children’s hospice in Georgia and brighten the days of children with chronic and incurable diseases. We hope that soon we will live in a country where the “Firefly World” will not be the only place where such children can receive adequate specialized care.
