On October 19, in Sheraton Metechi Palace, on initiative of Media Club and with support of Open Society Georgia Foundation civil society representatives organized a discussion meeting with regard to staffing the board of Trustees of Public Broadcasting.

Considering current active negotiations between the government and the opposition parties on replenishing the remaining 7 vacant position of the board of trustees the civil society observed the necessity to develop its vision and attitude towards the current issues.

“The aim of our meeting is to show society the need for actual depoliticization rather than staffing the board of trustees on political basis i.e. some candidates from opposition and some from the government”. The attempt of Media club today is the beginning of this process”, says Keti Khutsishvili, Executive Director of Open Society Georgia Foundation.

7 candidates were nominated by Media club at the meeting. “This is not the final decision and we are open for discussions and different opinions. This meeting shall ensure that the council is staffed by civil society candidates rather than as a result of political agreement”, said Ninia Kakabdze, member of the club.

Candidates represent civil organizations, impartial, apolitical figures. Next week Media club will submit the candidates’ applications to the public broadcasting.

The meeting was one of the initiatives of the Foundation and considered support of civil society’s involvement in burning issues in the country. Recently the Foundation supported discussion meeting on different topics of journalists and nongovernmental organizations.
